I left Colorado’s light several days ago to work in hazy Los Angeles. The drive out is always a reminder of what I am leaving, as the intimidatingly stout 14ers (like Gray’s Peak) loom over I-70 — almost courageous me to leave — slowly disintegrate into staggered planes and red rock plateaus, in turn losing their scorched colors and fading into a clay-type desert. It is here I feel really alone.

In the motel during my night-over in Utah, I watched Alone in the Wilderness. I had missed the first few minutes, but wasn’t paying attention noteworthy. What caught my look fair off the bat was the color. Films don’t leer like this today, they are all cartoony, over-saturated digital oilslicks. Wilderness was grainy, customary, low-contrast, and quite considerable to witness, until I realized what was going on, really noticed what the film was about.

Here was a man, who left his job to live secluded from the (technological) world. He built a cabin without disturbing the trees directly around his location. He eventually added a attractive chimney, made of stones mild throughout various hikes at varying altitudes. He built snowshoes and a dog-sled (despite the lack of dogs), and a backpack that could carry anything (slab of wood for a table top, or nearly an entire caribou) . At one point, he needs a wooden spoon, so — where today we would hop in the car, drive through traffic to a store and take one — he carves a improbable spoon out of wood, polished and perfected and filmed in less than an hour.

I couldn’t attend but wonder if this film was a godsend; am I doing the accurate thing spirited away from the mountains, where I am constantly outdoors in the sunshine? In California, I expend my days indoors, looking out into traffic, and usually I’m too busy to care. In the evenings, I have headaches, and easily become grumpy.

What is it we want in life? Alone in the Wilderness does not preach “leave the complex, live for simplicity.” The film doesn’t preach at all, in fact. The viewer simply watches this man’s life, which is a far shout from “simple,” by the way; it is constant work to end warm and well-fed. The dangers of the surrounding wildlife isn’t far from Mr. Proenneke’s walls of comfort. In one hilarious moment, though, Mr. Proenneke turns the camera onto a wolverine that had been avoiding him, only to select it rolling (literally sprawled out, rolling!) down a astronomical snowy hillside, enjoying the powdery snow and the brilliant sunshine.

At my young age, I must do what I feel is legal for me. But that doesn’t mean I can’t establish this disc in the player and vicariously live through a man far more intrepid and jubilant than I could ever be.

I bought the DVD because when I saw this on PBS I was simply mesmerized by it’s simple and unexcited beauty. Apt, the skills Dick had and the blueprint he built tools and his cabin was very wintry, but I understanding the greatest piece of the film was his esteem for nature. Even though he had to shoot and eat a Ram, he unruffled felt unpleasant for the ragged guy. The small clip of the wolverine rolling down the snowy hill was unreal. I like wolverines!!! The only section I did not like was the ending narration by the woman, who said something to the conclude that his spirit will live on in the perfect notches of his logs. Sinful! It lives on in that ravishing Alaskan boreal wilderness called Twin Lakes…the moss, the desirable trees, the blueberry bushes, all the mountains and lakes, and the animals.

Since it’s release in 1972 this film has fallen by the cinema wayside, being lumped into the blaxploitation genre – a purgatory from which it needs to be rescued. Labeling this film has microscopic its audience appeal in the thirty years that have followed, but those of us who were fascinated with it then remain so now.

“Across 110th Street” is sparked by the kind of gritty and incisive urban realism that blaxploitation films are missing. It’s production values are an immediate tipoff that you are watching a valid movie. The competent, skillful direction by Barry Shear; a superior memoir that hardly takes a breath; immense Harlem area shooting adds authenticity that makes it feel almost quasi-documentary.

It’s also highlighted by a grand cast of archaic A-list movie stars, B-movie regulars and a few performers getting their first chance in a meaningful role. Anthony Quinn, one of the films’ executive producers, plays a brutal, insensitive police detective with a walk of racism. Anthony Franciosa plays a cruel and ruthless Italian mobster tracking down his stolen money. Richard Ward plays a raspy voiced Harlem crime kingpin that Quinn tries to pressure; Ward will be recognizable to film buffs as a prisoner in the film “Brubaker” playing the pivotal role of Abraham. Paul Benjamin, the leader of the trio of thieves, appeared in the crucial role of the con ‘English’ in the terrific prison drama “Speed From Alcatraz”. Antonio Fargas creates another of his patented incandescent, hip characters as one of the thieves. And finally, Yaphet Kotto gets his first well-known film role playing the no-nonsense, by-the-book, newly assigned lieutenant who is refreshingly free of vulgarity – although he will buy a truck when he needs to!

Period detail keeps this film stuck squarely in the 70’s which is one of it’s strengths. The pulsating music gather by Bobby Womack and J.J. Johnson perfectly matches the films moments of tension and transitional scenes. Womack’s catchy title song is another plus.

MGM has released this as share of it’s ‘Soul Cinema’ DVD collection in Widescreen format – that’s with the dark bars on the top and bottom of the cloak for those who don’t know – and it’s a astronomical transfer. Pair this movie with “The French Connection” for a stout double feature.

Not a blaxploitation movie at all, this film is a sparkling, inviting, tough shaded crime drama that pulls no punches, and because of that is tranquil remarkably current today after 30 years. Made in 1972, it features an early performance by Yaphet Kotto as a by the book dusky police lieutenant who has to work with a uncouth, unruly white captain–Anthony Quinn in a very strong performance.

They’re after some shaded hoods who slaughtered five men–three whites and two blacks–in a holdup that netted 300 great. The getaway driver is played by Starsky and Hutch’s Antonio Fargas and is objective one of the several superb performances that give this film genuine power.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Across 110th Street! Click Here

Another is turned in by Tony Franciosa playing a Mafia lieutenant who finds out about the hit and, with his henchmen, goes after the hoods. In one of many violent scenes, he finds Fargas’ character and slices and dices him in a Harlem whorehouse.

The dialogue here is distinguished more knowing than in many dumber films and is another reason this is a accurate winner. When somebody talks–cop, hood, Mafioso, junkie, girlfriend–it’s natural, loyal, uncontrived, and completely credible. You understand who these characters are and you accumulate interested because they’re not shooting bull–they’re telling it like it is.

The mix of this down to the bone talk and ’70s dress and behavior makes this a tremendously provocative film. The inclusion of violence is not gratuitous at all; it’s an integral allotment of what happens–and what has to happen, given the circumstances.

Highly recommended for fans of crime drama.

First, a stamp. ZOMBIES OF THE STRATOSPHERE marked the science-fiction film debut of actor Leonard Nimoy. He plays Narab – one of the Martian “zombies” – and actually has a few lines in the film. I was kind of surprised Amazon didn’t list him as an actor – since Nimoy’s presence might actually lend to increased sales of this DVD station.

In the region of three years (1949-1952), Republic Pictures set aside out 3 “rocket man” serials – all using the same rocket suit for the hero. Only the hero’s identity changed. The first of the 3 was KING OF THE ROCKET MEN – starring Tristram Coffin as the hero in the suit, Jeff King. Then came RADAR MEN FROM THE MOON – starring George Wallace as the hero in the suit, Commando Cody. Finally, six months later, came ZOMBIES OF THE STRATOSPHERE – starring Judd Holdren as the hero in the suit, Larry Martin. All three are splendid serials and all deserve recognition. But only 1949’s KING OF THE ROCKET MEN episodes achieved after-market success – later compiled into a standalone film release titled LOST PLANET AIRMEN, released in 1951.

EDIT – Originally, I said that 1952’s RADAR MEN FROM THE MOON was turned into a 1953 TV series titled COMMANDO CODY – SKY MARSHALL OF THE UNIVERSE. Not just. While the “Commando Cody” name made the transition to the series, the fragment of Commando Cody was played by Judd Holdren (Larry Martin in the ZOMBIES serial) and the myth line was significantly different. Thanks to George Fergus who pointed that out in his comment.

The status of ZOMBIES OF THE STRATOSPHERE, even now, could be believable. An alien accelerate (Martians) is dying and their planet is slowly becoming unable to back life. To remedy this, the Martians advance up with a aesthetic but ingenious notion. At a distinct time during Earth’s rotation around the Sun, the Martians discovered that they could “blast” the Earth out of its orbit – and depart Mars into Earth’s site. To do this, they need to plot a super-powered hydrogen bomb at a strategic point – detonating it at a genuine moment.

Unfortunately for them, a group of scientists (Larry Martin, in particular), has become moving about clear crimes perpetrated in order score the material to beget the bomb. And he, and his rocket suit, are on the case.

All 3 serials were made available on VHS years ago. The first 2 are already available on DVD. This release of ZOMBIES OF THE STRATOSPHERE completes the process of putting excellent quality DVDs of all these serials in the public’s hands. If you’re a fan of Republic serials (or the “rocket man”), I hasten you to obtain all three serials on DVD. You’ll relish all three immensely.

This is easily one of the smartest and funniest shows on television… arresting or otherwise! It’s a shame that Sony has yet to greenlight season 3 (possibly due to the fact that the two episodes that were banned from airing stateside appear on this situation and Sony might be taking a wait and spy attitude to ogle what BET will do in response since it was BET’s threat to sue that got the episodes banned in the first space) . If you are easily offended by any sort of indecent language or racial humor and satire, this prove is NOT for you! However, if you delight in tall animation coupled with quick-witted writing, non-stop laughs and large underlying messages, Engage THIS Location NOW AND Query SONY GREENLIGHT SEASON 3!!!

As for BET… if BET execs are so concerned with how they’re portrayed in these episodes, perhaps they should reflect improving the quality of their programs rather than broadcasting… whatever it is they continue to pass off as entertainment. Sorry… I’ll collect off my soapbox now.

I found info that this dvd will be uncensored and uncut fair like the first season. And not only that, but it’s the complete second season, all 15 episodes including the 2 that never aired in the US. So no censorship. It will also acquire 4 featurettes, 2 ‘minisodes’, and audio commentaries on selected episodes picked by Aaron McGruder. Savor.

MFL is a marvellous film about a professor who turns a current flower girl into a lady. It is chunky of sing-a-long songs and humorous moments. It is basically a classic for all the good reasons! Plenty of re-watch factor makes it a film to gain.

In 1994, the film was restored and thank the lord they did! The film’s negative was almost lost forever. In fact, the film had become yellow-tinged and corpulent of scratches, blotches and all the rest! It would have been a very dim day for the movie industry if a flim like this had been lost.

The unusual DVD that featured this current restoration was released in the slack 90’s. This DVD included a 9 shrimp featurette, actor profiles, audio commentary, and Audrey Hepburn singing in 2 scenes.

Buy,Download, Or Stream My Fair Lady! Click Here

This novel 1-disc DVD has since been updated to a special 2-Disc Edition. Which one to glean? I have both so I feel edifying to respond this. The fresh DVD includes all the features found on the unusual DVD, except the actor profiles. The modern DVD once again includes the restored print but is apparently a novel transfer from the restored print. However, according to a picture that I have read, the novel transfer is not perfect and has aliasing problems throughout. The average watcher probably won’t recall up on this detail. If this is an bid to you, assume the unusual edition DVD where the transfer has been given two thumbs up!

The advantage of the special 2-Disc Edition DVD is that it includes a 58 small 1994 documentary hosted by Jeremy Brett (Audrey’s worship interest in the film) . Jeremy is no longer with us, so it’s nice to have this as a fraction of nostalgia. On top of this, there are many more features on this disc that aren’t included on the current DVD such as footage from the film’s premiere, production dinner, as well as discussions with Rex and Audrey.

The choice is easy. If you’re a fan of the film and don’t care for all the extras, purchase the unusual DVD. You at least salvage the best transfer. If you do care about having all the extras, assume both!

This is a extremely dazzling and stylish movie – the kind of spectacle that you honest don’t peek any more, in a positive type of Technicolour that impartial isn’t duplicated these days. Extremely witty and classic songs, a swish script, and lovely costumes. Admittedly, it is gaze candy, but what contemplate candy! George Cukor directs it with honest aplomb, turning “Titanic-era” London into a stylised and colourful melée, bringing out the humour and joyfulness of the screenplay, and Cecil Beaton’s extravagant and yet, somehow, chic costumes and sets construct a perfect setting for the actors – and the actors themselves are beneficial. Rex Harrison is totally believable as Henry Higgins, mixing crustiness with a very dry humour, whereas Audrey Hepburn looks fair honest as Eliza Doolittle. One is forced to ponder what Julie Andrews would have done in the role, following her playing the piece on stage, but I fair can’t inspect Eliza played by anyone other than Audrey Hepburn, who is, quite simply, palatable. From the mawkish, ramshackle flower-girl, to the rebellious pupil, to the icy and serene “lady” of the title, she is perfectly credible, whether throwing a Cockney temperament, or floating through the conservatory, calmly sending Professor Higgins about his business. I am told her Cockney accent is dreadful, but being deaf, I cannot comment; no more than I can comment upon the fact that apparently her recording of “Oh Wouldn’t It Be Luverly” has been reinstated upon the soundtrack. The appeal for this film lies in its spectacle – I saw it at the cinema once, in an arthouse revival, and it was utterly wonderful – and in the speech therapy storyline, which has a lot of relevance to me. “My Glorious Lady” is simply… a cinematic glory of a particular type that would be impossible to duplicate ever again. The Ascot scene is worth the money alone, a refreshing, gliding harmony of dim and white, choreographed and stylised escapism, totally summing up the essence of a musical.

For the narrate, I fill the fresh DVD release of The Seventh Seal along with this unusual HD transfer Blu Ray release and have done a miniature status checking comparisons between the two.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Seventh Seal! Click Here

For those that are unaware of what this film is, it has become an icon in the art house circle of film. The film won the Special Jury Prize at the 1957 Cannes Film Festival; a testament to its impact in this arena. I don’t pay mind to “Artsy” films and usually don’t appreciate them, however I took a chance on the unusual Criterion DVD release and loved it; thus the need and desire to upgrade to Blu Ray.

The myth is one of a knight (Antonius Block) and his squire (Jöns) returning from the Crusades only to rep that his homeland is being conquered by the plague. He travels the land towards his goal of being reunited with, what he has stated, is a wife whom he married young and has not seen for the 10 years he spent in the Crusades. In the opening scene Anotonius is greeted by Death. In a sequence that has been parodied in several films (Bill & Ted battling Death at Twister comes to mind), Antonius challenges death to a game of chess. If Anotonius wins, he goes on with his life; if he loses, his life comes to an kill. The game is not finished in a first sitting and there are several scenes in which the game takes a role.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Seventh Seal! Click Here

As he travels, a rag effect band of people accompany him; a smith, the smith’s wife, a woman whom Jöns saves from death and rape and two actors and their child with whom Antonius shares strawberries and milk in a scene where he begins to feel at peace.

Antonius struggles with his lot in life; questioning the existence of God, begging Death to lend him some of evidence of God’s existence (to which Death offers none) and eventually accepting his fate and using his reprieve to do the lives of the actors and their child thus giving meaning to a life which he felt meaningless.

To accept to the Blu Ray specific details, the video is transferred from a freshly prepared and restored film master. At least one sequence I prefer seeing wound in the recent DVD, which is shown in Criterion’s unique “how was it remastered” extra, is no longer damaged in this transfer. In fact, there was no easily apparent harm to be found anywhere and a more pristine print is likely unattainable. Criterion did a reliable job on the video transfer and have given the video an upgrade it desperately deserved. It is presented on the Blu Ray disc in it’s new aspect ratio of 1.37:1 so anyone expecting a cropped, stretched or otherwise molested image will be disappointed. Everyone expecting a movie presented in its unique aspect ratio will certainly be happy.

Not being a tremendous expert on things like film grain and what formats expose more grain than others when transferred to HD, I have to do it known that there IS grain note in this film. I don’t know, however, whether this grain is due to the unusual format of the masters or if Criterion added said grain during their transfer.

On the audio side, you have the novel Swedish mono audio remastered and restored in 24 bit LPCM uncompressed format. There isn’t a pop, click or crackle to be found, unbiased certain audio free of defects and pronounce. Also available, and I’m unaware of the format of it or if it has any damage/hiss/pop/crackle, is an optional English language dubbed sound track which I did not listen to.

Subtitles are improved from the new DVD release as the subtitles are a more literal translation. I admit to not really noticing a astronomical contrast in this arena, but if Criterion claims to have improved them, I will hold their word for it.

For extras you have quite a few current ones (and all the obsolete ones, minus one, detailed below) :

-Introduction to the movie by Ingmar Burgman (originally intended for presentation prior to playing the film on Swedish TV)

-Audio commentary by Peter Cowie (same as the novel DVD release)

-Afterword on the commentary by Cowie (novel)

-Bergman Island (region of mini-documentaries merged to earn 1- 83 limited documentary w/ interviews of Bergman; first time on any home video format)

-Archival audio only interview with Antonius Block actor, Max von Sydow

-1989 tribute to Bergman by Woody Allen

-Original trailer

-Bergman 101 (Peter Cowie gives a selected filmography of Bergman’s work)

For packed in extras, you will receive a printed booklet with an essay by film critic Gary Giddins. It’s a very high quality printing.

The only extra that doesn’t seem to have made the transfer to HD, as it was really specific to the novel DVD release, was the Restoration Demonstration. Everything else from the fresh is included, along with quite a few, very suitable, additions.

If you gain the modern DVD release and want to hold the definitive edition of the movie, you shouldn’t hesitate to retract up this Blu Ray disc.

If you beget the unique and don’t really care for the film or don’t feel the need to upgrade, then nothing on this release will change your mind.

If you don’t beget the previous release and want to view what all the “fuss” is about and want it in as perfect a presentation as is possible, grasp this on Blu Ray.

As a tag, the novel DVD release is “matted” in order to ensure every TV/display shows off as grand of the release as possible. Only the Blu Ray disc retains the fresh 1.37:1 ratio.

The film:

Bergman is one of those things. He won’t appeal to everyone. It’s arty, yes. It’s high belief. But really, when you accept down to it, many of his movies are not hard to seek at all. This one might be the most accessible. Max Von Sydow plays a crusading knight returning home wearily after a long campaign. With his servant, he encounters a country besieged by plague and despair. Against this backdrop, he encounters Death, whom he challenges to a chess match. Does he want to live forever? No. He wants answers to his soul-chilling skepticism about God and life.

The performances are all very marvelous, especially Von Sydow and Gunnar Björnstrand as his squire. Dialogue is clipped and spare, but evocative. Sydow has some particularly righteous scenes in the chapel, confessing his doubts.

Overall, it’s easy to sight why this film is hailed as a classic. It’s deep, but also brief enough and paced well enough to be scrumptious. The ending is a bit cryptic, but not in an off-putting blueprint. It should definitely be viewed by anyone with an start mind for “world cinema.”

The Blu-Ray:

This is a tremendous transfer. This is what I’m definite we all hoped “Dr. Strangelove” would be. There is a exquisite, regular grain structure which allows us to seek terrific detail, especially in foliage, facial features, and cloth textures. Dusky levels are solid and consistent, so objects in the shadows are always well delineated.

You MUST fabricate obvious your gamma and brightness are plot well! This is a film in which a lot of stuff can be lost in the shadows – it is very high difference. In the opening shot, if your prove is crushing blacks, the mountains will search for like one unlit blob, when in fact there is a stout amount of detail and shading on rocks. SO: if you do not have a disc like Digital Video Essentials, at the very least pop in a Lucasfilm disc to consume the “THX Calibrator.” It has a contrast/brightness pattern that should derive you status correct.

Extras include a LONG documentary/interview allotment with Bergman in his later life, presented in 1080i. Commentary is provided by a film scholar.

***********

If you are a fan of Bergman or this film, this is a no-brainer. There is detail here you’d never eye on a DVD, and the dismal levels (so well-known on a b/w film like this) are distinguished deeper and more consistent than any SD presentation could allow. Extras are a nice complement, and for the ticket, you really can’t beat this, especially compared to what Criterion releases cost fair a few short years ago.

If you’re more of a neophyte to this kind of cinema, you should rent first. Gaze if you like this sort of thing. Don’t be daunted by the reputation of this and other Criterion releases. Give it a helpful objective try. You might be pleasantly surprised.

I happened to stumble across this petite gem in a Dread movie DVD collection I bought during Halloween. It was the best DVD collection I ever bought, not only because of all the movies that came with it but also because it exposed me to the the highly toothsome, UNDERTAKER AND HIS PALS. One night I fair decided to seek this one, mainly because of the off beat sounding title and was pleasantly surprised!

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Undertaker and His Pals! Click Here

The movie goes by snappily with tons of dreadful jokes, unpleasant camera angels, intelligent red buckets of gore, poor sound quality, off timed vocal dubbing and many more things that most people would try and avoid doing while making a movie. Not only does the “cheese” factor makes this a breezy experience but the movie itself is only about an hour long! Whoever made this movie was obviously unprejudiced trying to cash in on teenage crowds going to their local sleazy Drive-In theaters and nothing more.

The accurate movie status is magnificent ridiculous, an undertaker has joined up with a couple of coarse rent diner goons with a contrivance to ruin young people. They back some of the bodies up as food in the diner and then dress the rest of the corpse up with expensive clothing and acquire their families pay high prices at the funeral. Meanwhile, the undertaker is the “brains” leisurely the whole operation, if you can call it that.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Undertaker and His Pals! Click Here

If all of this sounds blooming plain, that’s because it is. THE UNDERTAKER AND HIS PALS is the type of movie that you seek at 2 o’clock in the morning with your best friends, while totally drunk. Everything about the movie is so unpleasant that it impartial kinda’ captivates you from the moment it starts to the moment it’s finished. This is an early example of a right “Grindhouse” movie. The copy I gain is of such abominable quality that it almost makes it worth while, mainly because of that venerable school vintage peer.

Every single person I’ve shown this movie to has totally enjoyed it. It’s one of those “it’s so terrible, it’s agreeable” type of movies. I even contemplate it’s better and more delectable than Thought NINE FROM OUTER Status! Gore hounds have a few scenes to relish here and there. One being a delicate laughable death curious a woman in a steam room getting beaten to death with a rusty chain! Determined, it’s not gory like HELLRAISER or THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE but for the time period, it does boast a capable amount of splatter. Fans of reliable and serious Awe might want to avoid this movie, mainly because it’s so unpleasant that you’ll slay up hating it more than anything else. If you don’t mind bad acting, bad camera work, terrible editing and messy gore, then you may actually like this movie.

My best advice, unprejudiced peep the movie!

“The Undertaker and His Pals” is a moldy allotment of stinky cheese from 1966 starring Ray Dannis (not to be confused with the vastly more talented Ray Dennis Steckler) as The Undertaker. The film revolves around three cannibal bikers led by Dannis on a culinary crime spree. The film opens with a girl whose last name is Lamb (bet you can’t contemplate this one coming…) who is killed and has her leg removed for expend in the chef’s special at “The Greasy Spoon” a diner hurry by the other two bikers. It was inevitable that the special the following day would be “leg of lamb”, which Private Investigator Harry Glass and his secretary Miss Poultry (really) come by not to their liking. Unfortunately for Miss Poultry, she’s next on the hit list and the next day’s special is equally predictable, although no more exquisite.

During their last killing, a woman shoots off the license plate of one of the bikes in the most unlikely part of marksmanship in history, leading Glass and police ultimately to the solution to the puzzle with the assistance of twin vixens Thursday and Friday. The conclusion couples the least plausible accidental death scene in history with the worst closing theme song (“Reduce In, Carve Up, Gash Out”) in ready recollection.

The film has defective production values. The color is so dreadful that parts of it appear almost to be shadowy and white, while other parts are so skewed in blue and yellow color balance as to almost require sunglasses. The sound effects are not remotely well synched with the film, and the special effects are utterly funny. The soundtrack relentlessly juxtaposes drum solos, jazz trumpet and saxophone licks, and ragtime piano snippets at completely random and meaningless locations, which were sometimes so jarringly unfriendly that their very presence made me laugh. The acting is heinous, and the script is riddled with stilted dialogue and continuity problems as well as inane logical problems. How did Dannis survive his descend from the top of a building to advance relieve in the next scene? Why did the chef change from killing Dannis to killing his fill wait staff in mid scene? I don’t know, and I doubt that T.L.P. Swicegood, director of this mess, did either. Mercifully this film killed his career, so we don’t have to endure more daily cannibalistic specials in a sequel.

The film is ostensibly a comedy, but really isn’t comic. I generously gave it two stars for a modicum of camp value, and for the fact that it’s only 66 minutes long. Sometimes less is more.

One can never understand the humor and spirit in this movie if one does not understand Cantonese or has not lived in Hong Kong. This is meant to be a light-hearted comedy! The dialogs are filled with contemporary everyday Hong Kong slangs! When translated into English, they may seem dull and out-of-place, but the movie uses these dialogs ON PURPOSE to effect a brillant level of mocking humor. This is not meant to be an legend, but a very savory movie by all means.

Perhaps the one flaw with “wire-fu” movies is that they tend to hold themselves too seriously — humor is fair mighty absent from movies like “Hero” or “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.” That isn’t a spot with “White Dragon,” a amusing itsy-bitsy action/romance flick that never quite gets serious. Not too noteworthy, anyway.

Black Pheonix (Cecilia Cheung) is an average airhead schoolgirl — she thinks about her looks, school, clothes, her looks, the shapely second prince, and her looks. But when the ancient hero White Dragon (Nay Suet) is injured, she bestows her powers on Dismal Pheonix. And a dreadful case of acne, which White Dragon assures her can be cured by doing capable deeds.

Pheonix is starting to devour her bold alter ego — White Dragon Jr. — when she is called on to buy the blind assassin Chicken Feathers (Francis Ng) . But she breaks her leg during the fight, and to her surprise, Chicken Feathers brings her to his home and nurses her benefit to health. Now Pheonix must manufacture a choice — assign the blind outlaw, or wed the hunky prince?

When watching this film, do not steal it seriously, unless it wants to be taken seriously. The first half of it is an unabashed joke — where else could you peruse an traditional Chinese musician rupture her lute, while the audience does the wave? McDonald’s, baseball, designer handbags, and Latin pop tunes all come by name-dropped over the course of the movie. And when Pheonix gets her powers, a downloading bar appears on the bottom of the shroud.

The area sags a bit when Pheonix and Chicken Feathers use time together at his cottage, and you originate wondering when the situation will net captivating again. And when it does, some of the humour has gone, as a broken-spirited Chicken Feathers wanders aimlessly through the town. Then it kicks into high gear again, with assassination plots, whirling fight scenes, and a wonderful finale where everything falls into state at last.

While there are moments that smack of cutesiness, like the “my only ragged region is you” line, the adore triangle is a remarkably sweet one — both Chicken Feathers and the prince are nice guys, and it’s easy to peek how Pheonix would be torn between them. And some twists are unusually sweet ones, such as the plan of Pheonix’s flute music allowing Chicken Feathers to “witness” the stars.

Cheung is the star as a girlish, selfish airhead, who is unexpectedly called on to be a hero — a sort of selfish Robin Hood (“Please don’t scar my face!”), who throws tantrums when she doesn’t earn her scheme. Her Pheonix is substantial fun unprejudiced to behold. But she can also play a more poignant section. And both Ng and Lei Liu give extraordinary performances as the rival lovers.

Pop-culture martial-arts are the order of the day in “White Dragon,” an unabashedly amusing comedy that also turns in some poignant romance and solid action.

Until CHICAGO reenergized the movie musical genre, this musical version of Charles Dickens’ immortal “Oliver Twist” was widely regarded as one of the last of the vast movie musicals. Indeed, with its high-energy performances, infectious music, sincere direction by Sir Carol Reed and fine sets, this movie won the 1968 Best Report Oscar over such formidable competition as THE LION IN WINTER, CHARLEY, and Comical GIRL.

Of course, most people are familiar with the classic epic of young Oliver Twist, whose mother dies giving him birth and is forced to be raised under the cruel supervision of the English workhouse officials. When he dares beg for more than his meager ration of gruel, the youngster is apprenticed to an undertaker and his extremely putrid family. After escaping this hostile environment, he finds himself taken in by the playful Fagin, the Artful Dodger(Fagin’s best pupil), and the rest of his band of young pickpockets. In time, however, Oliver will gain his home, but not before dealing with the likes of the brutal Bill Sikes with the befriend of Sike’s sympathetic lover, Nancy, and the suited Mr. Brownlow.

As musical films go, it is hard to fault the astonishing casting in this film. Price Lester makes a perfectly, if maybe overly, innocent Oliver, while Jack Wild is a delight as the rascally Artful Dodger. Shanie Wallis is heart-rending as the tragic Nancy. Oliver Reed (Sir Carol’s nephew) is truly scary as the menacing Bill Sikes. Harry Secombe displays a pleasing tenor in the humorous role of Mr. Bumble, the beadle of the workhouse. However, it is Ron Moody’s wonderful performance of the rascally Fagin that steals this movie. It is not surprising, when you assume that he created the role when the musical was first produced in London. Of course, the character itself has gone quite a change from Dickens’ current, going from the debatably obnoxious anti-Semitic portrait of the original to that of a lovable, if sneaky, eccentric. Indeed, Moody’s ample portrayal would state the tone for almost all future performances of the role to date, including those of such actors as George C. Scott and Richard Dreyfus, among others.

Some Dickens fans may quibble about the liberties taken with the book, from the softening of Fagin to the elimination of Oliver’s depraved step-brother Monks from the storyline. And it isn’t a perfect film by any means. (The child singer who dubbed Heed Lester’s songs sounds like she’s in an echo chamber of some sort, which makes Oliver’s singing a jarring dissimilarity to the rest of the cast.) But, as a musical film, it is a astonishing entertainment and satisfactory introduction to the classic anecdote. As a result, this is one musical that I would DEFINITELY recommend.

The movie musical was on its arrangement out by the time ‘Oliver!’ hit theaters in 1968. Happily, this marvelously fun and inviting film swept the Oscars and earns my vote for the best musical of the 60s (although ‘The Music Man’ ranks a conclude second) . Notice Lester is adorable in the title role and Jack Wild is a kick as the mischievious Artful Dodger. Then there’s Ron Morose recreating his stage role as the villainous (but collected likable) Fagin. He’s not exactly the same character created by Charles Dickens but he’s memorable impartial the same. And Shani Wallis’ Nancy along with Oliver Reed’s Bill Sikes give the film some dependable dramatic punch. The production beget strikingly recreates the feel and flavor of mid-19th century London. And the songs which include ‘Consider Yourself’ and ‘Oom Pah Pah’ are the icing on the cake. Do your family a colossal favor and add this timeless treat to your DVD collection.

I’ve been waiting for a special edition of House on Shrinking Hill for awhile now. The special features are listed as “90 minutes long” and include the following:

Buy,Download, Or Stream House on Haunted Hill: 50th Anniversary! Click Here

1. less than 5 minutes of a fan talking about Carol Ohmart (1 slight of it is with Jack Hill) . Raze of time.

2. less than 5 minutes of the same fan talking about very well known facts about the house in the movie. Kill of time.

3. over 80 minutes of trailers and a bad quality willian castle tv plot. End of time.

The only reason to capture this is for the wintry dvd art. Nothing else.

Maybe one day we’ll peer a special edition dvd worth buying. Until then, don’t double dip on this one.

The valid movie is astounding fun. A crazy, zany, hokey and totally gripping movie with the ultimate fright host – Vincent Note – giving us one of his many, many gigantic performances. I worship this movie!

But this particular 50th Anniversay Special Edition is NOT special in the least. It is a rip-off. And your host for this DVD is Johnny Fable who is NO “anecdote” in my book, as far as his absurd participation in this release is concerned.

The extras are as flimsy as the plausability of the movie’s plotline. But wherein the film’s plot-holes are forgiveable fun, the Extras on this DVD are an embarassment. They sound like they’d be mountainous – but they are not. “Return to the House” features a few restful contemporary shots of the Frank Loyld Wright house as it looks today and then Fable talking about the house in front of a chain-link fence. He could be in front of any chain-link fence…for we don’t even gaze the eminent house slack him! We never learn who owns the house now or what it is currently traditional for. We never obtain on the grounds with the camera and grasp a closer view at the house.

“Surprise William Castle TV Position” shows the lead-in to a game expose created by Castle – but fair when I opinion we’d derive to ogle the whole note (which had a most entertaining premise and panelists including Groucho Marx) …honest when I contemplate we’ll gaze the mystery-themed game point to, the featurette ends!

The “Carole Ohmart Profile” talks more about her role in “Spider Baby” then in “House” and ends without us ever finding out what happened to her ultimately. What could have been a bit more of her performance in “The Spectre of Edgar Allan Poe” is, instead, objective a two second clip of the older actress turning her head, not even speaking a line from that movie.

The Vincent Designate extras are fun to see: but Mr. Mark is always fun!

The DVD has NO chapter stops and the title credits are off with “Raunchy Tonk Production” on the camouflage and the credit title has “50th Anniversary Special Edition” stamped beneath the film title. I am a purist and despised these liberties.

There are no commentaries, no making of featurette, zilch. As for it being declared a “Mark Original Widescreen Transfer” I doubt it. It looked no different from some other versions I have.

Save your money – and what a tawdry arrangement to celebrate a 50th anniversary for a classic flick!
