Depending on who you are, Terry McMillan’s 1992 modern “Waiting to Exhale” is either a blessing or a dreaded curse. McMillan’s third recent about four African American women struggling to carry out stability, identity, and normalcy in Phoenix was praised in some circles for giving contemporary Sad women a much-needed snarl. But in other circles, mostly male, “Waiting to Exhale” was ripped to shreds as a peevish and ungrounded damnation of Sunless men as philanderers, deadbeats, and no-good-dooers. It also made McMillan the biggest literary target of criticsm since Alice Walker unleashed her recent “the Color Purple.” But whatever your prefer on the book is, the film adaptation won’t likely change your stance, as it stays overall faithful to the book. Director Forest Whitaker does a edifying job bringing to life these characters: Savannah (Whitney Houston) is the buppie composed in search for Mr. Right; Bernadine (Angela Bassett) impartial got dumped by her husband of 11 years for a white woman; Robin (Lela Rochon) is the ditzy bimbo serene trying to shake off her no-good ex, and Gloria (Loretta Devine) is the full-figured owner of a successful hair salon. The best performances, hands down, are Bassett and Devine, who produce the best impressions, and they wait on maintain the film entertaining at a helpful trail. The script, co-written by McMillan, is crisp with enough comical one-liners and a chronicle compelling enough to retain the viewer alive to. But there are flaws. Whitney Houston struggles in her role as Savannah; her performance is wooden and forced, and when paired against a seasoned pro like Bassett, she flat out crumbles. A more relaxed arrive to the material would have helped. Also, memo to Sad filmmakers: topple the swishy elated hairdresser stereotype! It’s tired, done a million times before, and, frankly, is grossly out of touch with reality. That aside, it’s not often that a movie successfully adapts a fresh as well as this one, and “Waiting to Exhale,” warts and all, merits a B in my school of cinema.

I have mixed feelings about this film. This is a expansive film with a very strong performance by Angela Bassett. This is a very silly film also. The humor keeps it flowing. I do feel, however, that the yarn focuses too noteworthy on these women “getting some” and that relationships overrule everything but work. The best section of the anecdote is Angela Bassett’s character. I also consider that the men in this film declare advantageous performances. The focus of the film is also the friendship between these women.

We have all of the video products of the Baby Einstein Company. This video is more similar in format to Baby Shakespeare than the Baby Mozart / Baby Bach videos. Nevertheless, I would say that Baby Van Gogh is a better attention-getter and -holder than Baby Shakespeare. The visuals are distinguished more professional and tantalizing – the main bid being color and art, as opposed to poetry readings.

If you are fresh to the Baby Einstein Company’s products, I highly recommend them over the products of the competing companies (we have a VERY extensive childern’s video library) . The live-action visuals are far more bright to infants and toddlers than the computer graphics and animation of other videos. In this respect (visually), Baby Van Gogh is even more dynamic than some of the earlier Baby Einstein productions – and certainly has a bit higher production quality. For babies under 6 months, however, I would recommend Baby Mozart as the best ’starter’ in the series.

As with Baby Mozart, Baby Bach and Baby Einstein, my daughter (now almost nine months) cannot derive enough of this video.

We have a number of the Baby Einstein videos in our home, but Baby Van Gogh is our hands-down celebrated. There are a number of segments on each of the basic colors, showing toys and nature photography that feature those colors. There are children also illustrating the colors (a runt girl holding a lemon, boys holding a blue umbrella, etc.) . Some of the other Baby Einstein videos feature only girls in live-action shots, but Baby Van Gogh has an even mix of boys and girls. I doubt my son really cares one map or the other, but I liked that aspect. The music featured in this video/DVD is also impressive. There are selections from some classical favorites like the William Hiss Overture or Bolero. It’s nice to have some variety, as opposed to an entire video of Bach or Mozart. Another thing that impressed me about this video is the artwork they exhaust to further illustrate sure colors. For each color, they have a different painting by Van Gogh (Starry Night for blue, Sunflowers for Orange, and so on) . This video brings together so many different aspects and blends them together seamlessly: art, nature, music. At the extinguish of the video, there is also a segment that details the toys shown throughout the program and their manufacturer. So in case you’re impressed with any of the items featured, you can recall them for yourself. Truly, this video more than any other provides a complete “Baby Einstein” experience. It’s obvious to be a celebrated in any home.

I wish people wouldn’t write this movie off completely because it is worth watching…at least once. What you heard about Chris Klein is suitable. He gives the worst performance of the decade. And I’m not kidding. One reviewer said he couldn’t even shuffle convincingly and they weren’t exaggerating. It wasn’t that the script was terrible. The guy was hamming it up even when he wasn’t speaking at all. There wasn’t a second in this film where he showed any acting skills.

Take Chris Klein out of the film, and Moon Bloodgood for that matter, and the movie is actually graceful well-behaved. Kristin Kreuk does a gargantuan job as Chun Li. Her action scenes recognize apt and her acting skills are dazzling great as well. This could have been a huge movie for her and launched her movie career if only everybody else around her wasn’t doing such a awful job.

There’s one scene (and character) that should have been taken out of the movie completely. It’s where Chun Li goes to a nightclub to hunt down one of Bison’s goons who unbiased turns out to be a lesbian. In order for Chun Li to rep the lesbian alone, she seduces her on the dance floor. The scene is painful to explore and adds nothing to the record.

There is some awful acting by radiant grand all the other actors in this movie but Klein is BY FAR the worse. The action is, at times, very safe. The storyline could have been better. The only thing to look for is Kristin Kreuk. If there was an option on the DVD to grasp out Chris Klein’s scenes, the movie would be far more delicious.

A film people appreciate to abhor. Game films have no friends. Previous fans are let down and film buffs are insulted. And the frigid guys want the right thing; but this worth a peruse. As a bottom feeder I’m impressed! The report and sound are the best I’ve seen in a year. And the DTS Loseless is the most noteworthy I’ve ever heard. Go ahead and judge you’re better than this film. I’ll relish it for myself.

The film is stunning, cheesy wire-fu fun and broad situation photography. I was entertained like I was with Intrepid Trio even though it’s processed. Pudgy disc, Anime film included.

I appreciate listening to all of the opening and ending songs whenever I gawk the exhibit, and have wanted to salvage them on CD for the longest time. However, I didn’t want to have to come by two OSTs in order to believe all of the OP/ED songs, especially if they are the TV versions (from what I’ve managed to salvage out) . Luckily, this CD solves that plight, and more.

For those who are lively about what exactly this CD has:

the first disk, the CD, has the full-length (not TV-sized) version of ALL of the opening/ending songs, and also includes “REALIZE”, the opening to the E7 video games, and the 10- diminutive version of “Niji”, arguably one of the best songs in the entire series. (it’s the song that played during the last episode, before the Epilogue.)

The second disk, the DVD, contains the TV intro/endings, the intro to both of the E7 games, and has a 10-minute special video of Niji.

If you wanted to hear the tubby versions of your popular OP/ED song(s), and have them all on the same CD, then this CD/DVD site is well-worth your money.

This is the follow-on to the first soundtrack for “Eureka Seven” anime series. Like the first volume, this is a two-disc region packed with music from the exhibit. (It’s a stout value compared to other shows’ soundtracks.) The first disc has the more venerable music from the reveal, including most of the opening, closing, and background music. Both the first and second disc have a smattering of awesome, feature-length electronic beats, including the 10-minute-plus song “Niji”.

Wes Anderson is at his best when he explores a tiny group of people — sometimes family, sometimes not — and explores what makes them tick.

And after the cluttered “The Life Aquatic of Steve Zissou,” Anderson returns to those roots with “The Darjeeling Small.” Technically it’s an Indian road inch movie, and it’s pudgy of his quirky charm… but at heart it’s impartial about three unhapppy brothers with a lot of baggage. Both literally and psychologically.

The forlorn Peter (Adrien Brody) and his luggage barely acquire it to an Indian impart in time to join his brothers, woman-chasing writer Jack (Jason Schwartzman) and bandaged control freak Francis (Owen Wilson) . They haven’t spoken for a year, and now they’re planning to awkwardly bond as they proceed to their estranged mother’s convent.

But after disasters intriguing a snake, painkillers and pepper spray, the three brothers accumulate themselves (and their monogrammed suitcases) thrown off the swear. As they inch abet to civilization, the three men plot out on a quest to glance the spiritual, deal with life, death, feathers, man-eating tigers, funerals and their hold painful memories… and possibly come by their mom.

Nobody in their correct mind would query Wes Anderson to hasten up an ordinary good-ol’-boys road hotfoot movie. At least, not the contrivance most directors would. Instead, Anderson crafts this as the baby brother to “The Royal Tenenbaums,” exploring a fractured, mildly dysfunctional family with an absent parent.

And the cinematic flavour of “Darjeeling Cramped” is mighty the same as in “Royal Tenenbaums” — bittersweetly amusing and arch, with a tinge of poetic gloomy underlying the dwelling. It would be an endearing movie in any setting, but somehow putting it in the mellow glow of India’s dusty roads, sparkling fields and cluttered shrines makes it even better. The quick-witted, visual richness gives it a sense of whimsy.

For the picture, Roman Coppola and Schwartzman helped Anderson out with the script, but there isn’t remarkable change. As always, lots of wry, amusingly contemplative dialogue (“I wonder if the three of us would’ve been friends in precise life. Not as brothers, but as people”), though there is some hilarious comedic scenes of sibling infighting. It even gets slapsticky.

Fortunately, Anderson never puts artificial twists into the tale, for any extra drama, comedy or thrills; the closest thing would be a brief detour into a child’s funeral. The chronicle simply flows by, because it’s all about the brothers — and focusing on anything but their self-imposed waddle would unprejudiced be extra baggage.

And the three men playing Jack, Francis and Peter are nothing short of shining. Brody is vaguely lost and forlorn, while Schwartzman is a quirky rake who is peaceful stunned by his last girlfriend (played by Natalie Portman in the short intro, “Hotel Chevalier”) . But there’s something almost painfully wounded about Wilson’s reckless control freak, which has nothing to do with his bandages.

“The Darjeeling Shrimp” is a visually improbable, contemplative tiny comedy, all about three men who have to deal with the past before they can go on. Do it on the shelf next to “Royal Tenenbaums.”

Synopsis: An ornate and psychedelically colored instruct known as the Darjeeling Petite transports three estranged brothers; Francis (Owen Wilson), Peter (Adrien Brody) and Jack (Jason Schwartzman) to destinations unknown (actually Francis is attempting to arrange a rendezvous with their constantly disappearing Mother (Anjelica Huston) now living as a nun in Tibet) . It has only been a year since their Father’s tragic death and each brother carries their absorb personal heartache over his passing and their Mother’s disturbing absence from the funeral.

As one comes to request when traveling with others, end proximity, annoying behaviors and ragged wounds eventually surface which must be dealt with as they arise. Add to the mix unforeseen events both aboard the screech and at intermittent stopovers along the arrangement and you have the makings of a transformational experience unlike anything the brothers could have anticipated.

Critique: The ‘07 film `The Darjeeling Limited’ begins painfully tedious and incomprehensibly exclusive but if you have the fortitude to survive the first 40 minutes you will eventually collect yourself on a delightfully oddball, unpredictable spin across the Indian subcontinent on a spiritual wander in search of physical, emotional and relational healing. Serving as a metaphor for life’s scuttle, one might say that we are all aboard the Darjeeling Small headed in the same direction to parts unknown. In the final analysis one learns that it’s not where you’re headed but how powerful baggage you go along with you.

There’s a lot of food for belief hidden away in this film for those who are willing to place in the pain and spy until the very extinguish. Give it a try if you’re in the mood for something obtuse.

My 2 yr weak Daughter loves the songs and loves to explain along with them. And a major plus is that its heavenly long. Honest long enough for their attention spans and not too short that i have to preserve listening to the same songs over and over again

My daughter loves Dora and all her shows. She would sit and glance this DVD as many times as I would let her. Most Dora shows are 25 minutes long, but this one is double that so it gives me a larger block of time to secure stuff done while she is watching. Very cute!

Oh what a fabulous film! This is Hayley Mills’ first adult role and one of her finest performances! A sensitive and graceful epic about a young married couple who encounter problems consulmating their marriage. It was considered controversial when released, but is very level-headed compared to today’s films. This splendid film is long overdue for a release in the U.S. The whole cast is sparkling and the epic is dazzling. John Mills gives an outstanding performance. The record will proceed you. The acting is suburb, and the scenery is glorious. Least yet to mention, a splendid music accept by Paul McCartney that adds the finsihing touches to get this outstanding in every sense! This is a must for all of Hayley’s fans, and if you are not a fan, you will when you peek this film. Hopefully, this will be the beginning of a series of Hayley’s British films that are not released here to wait on studios to release more of her treasured British films. It’s time for those sleepy studios to wake up and realize that America tranquil loves Hayley Mills. It is certainly one of my top ten all time favorites, and it gets better each time I idea it. Surprise your eyes with this powerful film! They don’ execute great films and have generous performances like this anymore.

Why did it recall so long for this first rate film to present up on DVD? It concerns a unbiased married young man who for reasons more psychological than physical cannot consummate his relationship with his novel wife. What makes this film a standout is that it takes a subject which by its very nature could have been crass and buffonish, and treates it instead with warmth and sympathy. The peformances and credible and winning throughout, giving the feeling of loyal and complex human beings, not caricatures. Highly recommended.

Every reviewer out there has praised this prove for its brilliance and I’m going to be redundant and do the same. From its first episode to the last few seconds of the Christmas Specials, The Office never has one poor line or one fraudulent notice. It’s unbiased about perfect.

Almost every scene takes spot in the slow offices of the Slough branch of the Wernham Hogg paper company (Dawn, the receptionist, accurately describes it as “a crappy sub-branch paper merchant’s) . Wernham Hogg employs about 40 people and we net to know all their faces as we inspect them inspect at computer screens, hold coffee breaks, and goof off day after day. It’s as realistic as TV has ever been. Nobody is too shapely, everyone’s “office-casual” wardrobe is slightly wrinkled, and everyone looks bored out of his or her mind most of the time.

The people we earn to know best are: Gareth Keenan, a bizarre “team leader” with a fixation on survival skills; Dawn Tindsley, the sweet and sarcastic receptionist who is stuck in both a expressionless job and a slow relationship; Tim Canterbury, a sales acquire who hates his job but can never seem to actually cease it; and David Brent, a man who thinks he’s everyone’s “friend as well as their boss” but who is actually liked and respected by no one.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Office – The Complete Collection BBC Edition! Click Here

The two main yarn threads running through all 14 episodes of The Office are Tim’s attempts to convince Dawn to leave her idiotic fiance and David’s constant need to ticket his employees, bosses, and everyone he meets with his various talents. We survey his “humor,” his “poetry,” his “songs,” his “dancing,” and his philosophical “wisdom.” All of which are horrifyingly dreadful. David’s constant need to gain ends up slowly destroying him, Tim and Dawn remain unhappily inert, and things derive worse and worse for everyone until the exhibit almost becomes unbearable to peek. The cast is so kindly, though, and every line so pitch perfect, that you’d follow these people anywhere, even in despair. Also, the spacious thing about The Office is, like life, all the possibilities continually exist for these characters and we never know when they might have a moment of redemption.

So, it’s not strictly a comedy, but it is the funniest, most devastating, and strangely uplifting point to I have seen in new years.

There has been powerful hype about “The Office” being a ample sitcom on the level of “The Honeymooners” or “Fawlty Towers” and it is that, but it’s something else, too. It may be the invention of a current genre you might call the sit-tragi-comedy, because there are many moments in this dim, unforgettable reveal when the skull beneath the skin of the human condition becomes appallingly visible. They may sound pretentious (as Ricky Gervais says jokingly about his display on the DVD, it’s like Dickens, only better) but “The Office” deserves every scrap of praise it gets.

It owes a lot to the Christopher Guest mockumentaries like “Waiting for Guffman” in which the limits of human self-delusion are scathingly explored. There’s also the achingly tart characterization and wit of “Fawlty Towers.” Neil LaBute’s savage comedies of sexual combat and office politics seem show as well. There’s also the unmistakable whiff of Samuel Beckett (yes, I said Beckett) in the pacing and style, the emptinesses and Godot-like futility of the work. Perhaps the greatest aspect of the note is how it combines both mercilessness and compassion at once. Many of the characters are unprejudiced dreadful people, but on the other hand at times they are very painfully aware of it. As David Brent despairingly wails, after his exploits have supposedly been telecast all over Britain, “I am not a plonker!”

David Brent, brilliantly incarnated by series co-writer and creator Ricky Gervais, is a Frankenstein-like compilation of the worst qualities of every boss you ever despised. Abusive, dishonest, incompetent, socially inept; yet convinced in his absorb mind he is a “chilled-out entertainer and comedian” before he is a boss, Brent is a walking inducer of cringes and acid reflux. The only worse person in the site is the truly vile Chris Finch; bully, insult-artist and would-be womanizer. (The bar they frequent, Chasers, is like Dante’s Inferno position to disco music.) The team leader, Gareth, is a weedy microscopic git who believes he is Rambo. The corporate executives circle the office like sharks, waiting for the next opportunity to slice jobs. Caught up in the mess are two innocents; Tim, the radiant 30-year-old clerk who aloof lives with his parents and sees through everything and who is in care for with Dawn, the sweet receptionist who is engaged to a swinish yob from the warehouse.

Scott Adams, of Dilbert fame, says that he is not anti-business but anti-idiot. I contemplate the same could be said of “The Office”; although the environment truly is soul-crushing, unexcited most of the characters wounds are self-inflicted. (The incredibly unpleasant music video Brent makes with the money from his severance package can be seen in the Christmas special, and it has the power to gain your jaw plunge to the floor.) Included on this DVD are both seasons of the present as well as the Christmas special which bring the series to an demolish. It’s not too noteworthy to protest that the creators do bring a blissful ending of sorts; whether you contain it can be sustained even 24 hours after the “documentary” cameras have finally been turned off is of course up to you. A intellectual, classic series.

Based on Bret Easton Ellis’ controversial original American Psycho, this film tells the memoir of an 80’s yuppie named Patrick Bateman (played by Christian Bale) who works on Wall Street by day and kills people by night. Like the often misunderstood unusual, the film is more of a shadowy social comedy than a accurate awe myth. Bateman dresses and talks like all the other wealthy, young Wall Street crowd, and thus erroneous identity plays a titanic portion in his getting away with homely murders again and again. Bateman’s bear grip on reality begins to blur over time and at various times throughout the movie it’s quite distinct that Patrick’s conception of reality is a sick, homicidal dream of endless torture and killing. Even when Bateman confesses at one point, no one listens or seems to care. Everyone has their hold agenda and the main effort of Bateman’s friends is which extravagant restaurant to dine at next, or getting the latest and greatest business card to sign one another.

Casting Christian Bale was a shimmering choice by director Mary Harron, who almost got fired from the project because of not choosing Leonardo DiCaprio for the starring role. I honestly don’t judge anyone could’ve captured Patrick Bateman’s personality more flawlessly than Bale, who gave an astonishing, chilling performance. And casting Reese Witherspoon as the prissy, bubble-brained Evelyn, who’s engaged to Bateman but knows nothing of his psychotic, homicidal behavior, was a perfect choice. Considerable of the dialogue in the film is taken directly from Ellis’ book, and the horrific violence of the book was toned down considerably, with distinguished of it taking situation off camera. Many viewers don’t seem to savor the frequent humor in American Psycho, such as the various times Bateman says crazy things like, “I’m into murders and executions” that no one seems to hear. And his philosophical ramblings about the music of Huey Lewis & the News, Phil Collins, and Whitney Huston are hysterical!

The unique “Killer Collector’s Edition” is a mixed bag as far as worthwhile special features go. The documentary “From Book to Mask” is in depth but instead of having unusual interviews with the stars there are mostly plain interviews with film critics. Plus, it seemed like there was intention too noteworthy coverage of the unusual and very microscopic on the right shooting of the film. There’s a lame video essay read by some singer and a documentary on the `80s. Thankfully, there are several deleted scenes (with optional director’s commentary) as well as several comical trailers. My well-liked special feature (and probably the main reason why you should by this edition) is the director’s commentary which tells lots of arresting slack the scenes info. And, the represent and sound quality are better than ever! American Psycho IS NOT a film for everyone, but for those who like lustrous satires with a miniature anxiety mixed in, this novel classic is a sure must for your DVD collection! And before you consider or even witness this movie, you should read Ellis’ current to be pleased the whole, uncensored yarn.

“I like to dissect girls. Did you know I’m utterly insane? ” -P. Bateman

No doubt about it, Mary Harrion’s “American Psycho” is definitely not for every taste and audience demographic. The satisfactory news is, perhaps, that the film is nowhere reach as gross and gory as both its subject matter and its controversial nature would lead one to fill. In fact, its tone of ironic silly detachment helps to de-emphasize the more sordid aspects of the material and to instead highlight the film’s bitingly satiric message.

Buy,Download, Or Stream American Psycho! Click Here

Set in the mid-1980’s, “American Psycho” casts a scathing gape on the then-brand current, up-and-coming group of 20-something executives known as “yuppies.” Patrick Bateman, the psycho of the title, is a man who literally seems to have everything – lovely splendid looks, a astonishing physique, a magnificent fiancé, a diploma from Harvard and a successful career as a Wall Street executive. Yet, alone of the young men with whom he consorts, Patrick flatly admits to us in voice-over narration that he is literally an empty-suit – that his perfectly maintained outer appearance, seemingly well-ordered social routine and empty, superficial personal relationships merely veil the right emptiness that lurks at the core of his soul. Remarkable of the complexity of Patrick’s character comes from the fact that he seems, paradoxically, to be both obsessed with the plan of conforming to the values of the world he lives in, and, at the same time, being strangely conscious of their unreality and meaninglessness. Thus, we leer him becoming almost emotionally unglued because he fears he will not be able to reserve the wonderful table at a posh upscale restaurant or because he feels that one of his corporate buddies has a more impressive looking business card than he does. Mighty of Patrick’s madness has its roots in the kind of obsessive-compulsive paranoia that arises from the unique insistence that life should and, indeed, can be converted into a perfect, problem-free existence if one objective has enough money and a sufficient amount of the suitable “stuff” to obtain it that plot. Frankly admitting that he feels no emotional attachment to any other human beings, Patrick is thereby free to channel his madness into its ultimate anti-social, taboo-shattering shape and form: serial killing. Thus, as days turn to nights, Patrick begins to rack up his victims and potential victims – a homeless man, assorted prostitutes, an ex-girlfriend, an unctuous business associate, even some policemen who glean wise to his activities later in the film.

Luckily for the squeamish among us, far more of the film’s running time is devoted to a comical rather than thriller mode. The brittle, dryly droll Mary Harrion/Guinevere Turner screenplay mines the corporate world milieu and the curved rantings of a values-free mind for all their unlit comedy potential. Christian Bale brings a powerful subtlety to a glum role, managing to seem coolly alluring, chillingly collected, touchingly pathetic and wryly comic all at the same time. Special credit should go to the stark, almost antiseptic search for the filmmakers do through the art direction and dwelling obtain, a gawk that matches in visual terms the factual and emotional emptiness of the characters and their world.

Much was made of the anti-woman tone of the fresh at the time of its initial release. Perhaps because the writers and the director are themselves women, the movie seems to have toned down that aspect quite a bit. Indeed, as in a movie like “In the Company of Men,” we gather ourselves not so mighty appalled as sadly bemused by the vehemently anti-women comments uttered by Patrick and his cronies because we gape what shallow losers these men really are. Harrion and Turner obviously know whereof they mumble.

To reiterate, “American Psycho” may not be everyone’s cup of cinematic tea, but those looking for a attractive runt satire of recent American life will pick up some clear rewards.

I was trapped!!! I was over at my Mother’s house and at the last moment, in a place of absolute resignation, I agreed to leer this movie. Before I came over I heard her relay the brief synopsis of the film over the phone and I was expecting a ridiculous anecdote filled with ridiculous characters. It has all that, but it is more often than not surprisingly arresting. Kathy Bates is the brightest star here and she portrays her “homemaker” character with tremendous subtelty and depth, making her instantly likeable. Rupert Everett shows up about a third of the plot into the film and is impartial one of the many character actors in this film that shine upon arrival. The major flaws appear when the viewer starts thinking too distinguished. In fact, sometimes thinking at all will extinguish a scene. For instance(s), there are some astronomical moments when characters shatter out in song. Even though the scene calls for singing to occur it is serene very refreshing amid all the crazy and far-fetched plotting circling around. Kathy Bates sings! She has more than fair a righteous suppose. I was often impressed. She carries this film, being the proverbial “heart” of the account, but the entire cast is reliable. There are even a few cameo appearances including Barry Manilow and Julie Andrews. This movie is completely wonderful, but overall, it is a surprising and appealing film. Recommended.

What can one say about a movie that features Julie Andrews singing GETTING TO KNOW YOU on a turbulent-ridden plane AND at the funeral of a worldwide singing sensation? AND Barry Manilow joining the cast for the finale’s showstopper? It may all seem mushy, maudlin and over the top, and it is! But this miniature gem is a delightfully intelligent movie, plump of smashingly top-notch performances. Oscar winner Kathy Bates shines as Grace Beasley, a housewife with a dream of becoming a singer, a husband who leaves her after 25 years and a scramble to England for the funeral of her murdered singing idol, Victor Fox. Bates hits all the honest notes and is utterly charming.

Rupert Everett as the singer’s unknown lover is at first all brutish and loutish, but once we learn a dinky more about him, he becomes the film’s ironic hero. Everett is very agreeable in this role.

Dan Aykroyd plays Bates’ husband with all the timidity and self-serving bravado that explains the lack of adventure in their lives.

Jack Noseworthy, a very underrated young actor, portrays their son, who has also left his wife (we’ll gather to her later!) .

Peter Skaasgard (Shattered Glass) plays the window washer with a secret. His youthful innocence is appropriately fitting.

Lynn Redgrave and Stephanie Beacham are distinguished as Victor’s noxious and grabbing sisters. Their scenes are few, but they are intellectual!!

Jonathan Pryce (who got his inaugurate in Miss Saigon) is astounding as the Tom Jones/Elvis Presley clone, whose kill leads Bates and Everett to acquire his killer–the Crossbow Killer.
The movie belongs, however, to the savory Meredith Eaton, who plays Bates’ daughter-in-law. Eaton is a dwarf (really) and she has a ravishing face and is so pudgy of energy and oomph she lights up the camouflage. Her recall off on the red-raincoated dwarf from ‘DOn’t Recognize Now” is absolutely hilarious. I hope we view more of Ms. Eaton in the future—she is colorful!
This movie is a favorable surprise, and is outrageously appealing.
