From the Fox Noir series comes Shock (1946), a sunless, tantalizing diminutive film featuring Vincent Brand (The Coast, The Tingler, The Dreadful Dr. Phibes) and Lynn Bari (Charlie Chan in City in Darkness, The Astonishing Mr. X) . Directed by Alfred L. Werker (He Walked by Night), the film also features Anabel Shaw (Home, Sweet Homicide, Gun Crazy), Frank Latimore (The Razor’s Edge), Stephen Dunne (The Sunless Past), and Charles Trowbridge (Valley of the Zombies) .

As the film begins we view a woman named Janet Stewart (Shaw) checking into a San Franciscan hotel with the intent on meeting her husband Paul (Latimore), a lieutenant in the military who’s been missing for the past couple years, only recently rescued from a POW camp, or something like that. Anyway, while anxiously awaiting the arrival of husband (two years is a long time to go without any action, and I should know), Janet witnesses a kill from her balcony as a man across the intention bludgeons his wife to death during a heated argument. When Paul finally arrives, he finds his wife in a place of shock, unable to recede or roar, presumably brought on by that which she witnessed earlier. The hotel doctor is called in, but seeing Janet’s condition as something out of his league, he refers her to another hotel resident, a specialist in this sort of thing, named Dr. Richard Execrable (Sign), who also happens to be the same man Janet witnessed clubbing his now stupid wife. Richard, fast realizing the cause Janet’s catatonic region, recommends she be taken to his private sanitarium for further `treatment’. Upon their arrival at the sanitarium we meet a nurse in attendance, one named Elaine Jordan (Bari), who happens to also be Richard’s girlfriend (and the cause of the spat between Richard and his now dreary wife) . After getting Elaine up to rush on recent events (she seems unusually frigid about everything), she and Richard inaugurate making plans to not only pick care of the body of Richard’s now deceased wife, but to also deal with the only gaze to the crime who ain’t saying mighty in her original spot, but represents a true threat that when the shock wears off, she’ll most likely spill the beans.
I enjoyed this film a lot, especially the performances by both Brand and Bari, both of which represented the main strength of the feature, in my idea. I’ve always been a fan of Vincent Sign, particularly his ability to pick on a role and effect it seem believable. I found it very easy to remove off on the pretense of his being an noted physician in the psychiatric field, one who specialized in disorders of the mind. I’m generally frail to his more garish and over-the-top performances as in his later, straight up terror features, so it was lively seeing him in an early, more restrained role, comparatively speaking (either scheme he’s fun to inspect) . I concept Ms. Bari, who’s displayed more prominently than Stamp on the DVD case artwork, also did a extraordinary job, and I’m not objective saying that because I’m partial to tantalizing brunettes. Her character was a subtly faulty fragment of work, along with being extremely easy on the eyes, and it was easy to gaze how someone might go to such extremes in an anguish to acquire a relationship with her (I don’t know that I’d commit assassinate for her, but I might judge maiming someone for her affections) . One really provocative element with the two characters was how Richard often felt the pangs of remorse or regret for his `un-Hippocratic’ behavior, only to procure a positive amount of appeasement from Elaine, who was driven by only one, encompassing desire, to be with Richard free and sure, no matter what had to be done to ensure the safety of the relationship (further cementing my concept that women are truly foul) . As far as Shaw and Latimore’s characters, they open off well enough, but their characters rapidly plunge into the realm of one dimensionality once the screenplay properly introduces Price’s character. I understanding there were some exact opportunities to construct them into more that what they were, but it wasn’t to be especially given the film runs a mere 70 minutes and it seems more or less a showcase for Imprint. Sometimes I gripe about a film running too long, containing extraneous and unnecessary material, but in this case I believe it was the opposite. There seemed a number of areas that could have been more developed (a couple of the characters, the disposition of Richard’s wife’s body, the subsequent police investigation, the scare of being stuck in a mental institution bustle by someone who knows you witnessed them murdering someone else, etc.) . All in all the production values were decent enough, the direction agreeable, the key performances extraordinary, but the screenplay seemed less than it could have been, resulting in a moderately solid film that could have been a whole lot more. Regardless, it’s worth checking out, especially if you’re a fan of Designate.

The characterize, presented in fullscreen (1.33:1), comes across very shapely and definite, and the Dolby Digital audio, available in both English mono and stereo and Spanish mono, sounds astounding. As far as special features there’s an piquant commentary track by film writer and historian John Stanley, liner notes, subtitles in both English and Spanish, and trailers for other features including Boomerang! (1947), Fourteen Hours (1951), House of Strangers (1949), I Wake Up Screaming (1941), Laura (1944), Vicki (1953), and Where the Sidewalk Ends (1950) .

Another one of the mid 1940’s film noir examples. Vincent Impress play the doctor with spoiled intent. After murdering his wife, he has the chance to do in the only contemplate to his crime. Will he or not? This is not a classic by any means, but Vincent Note is always fun to search for. This is a generous example to glimpse from the period if you are unfamilar with it. It is also sterling if you are familar because this is not all that well known. Either map it is worth a peep.

I have to admit I was underwhelmed by the ads for “Madagascar”, it impartial didn’t recognize that capable. But my kids were anxious to look it so I dragged myself into the theater on Saturday ready to gape another kiddie movie along the lines of “Shark Sage” or “Home on the Range”. I did not inquire of to like the movie as considerable as my seven year ancient….if not more. “Madagascar” is not only a broad engrossing film and packs as many laughs into it’s hour and half as either “Shrek” movie did, “Madagascar” is impartial a immense comedy. There were several times in the movie that were unprejudiced laugh out loud silly, the scene with the Penguins in Antarctica was worth the trace of admission for me! There are plenty of jokes aimed at an older audience, like the reference to “The Twilight Zone” episode “How to Help Man”. The epic is colossal and the characters are really fun. The visuals are fine and the animation is estimable. Add all that together with a ample soundtrack, and I contemplate “Madagascar” is a gargantuan device to kick off the summer movie season. This one ranks lawful up there with “The Incredibles” and “Shrek”.
Madagascar is a cute and laughable movie. Parents and kids were laughing through most of the movie. (there was an cramped while where the tale gets slow.) But, I adore the penguins and the fact that they are always so sneaky; they really acquire the explain from the main characters. If you have kids this is a obvious must peep, we had kids laughing the whole time and most loved the knowing colors, music and especially dancing. You saw a lot of dinky kids dancing in their chairs. People without kids or older kids will also indulge in the movie as it has a lot of jokes for adults to support us entertained and laughing; the radiant colors are also spacious for us as well as the dancing and music. I felt this cartoon lived up to its previews and the diagram it was perceived. My only hope is if they do a 2nd one that they include more of those sneaky penguins.

As a worn Jew who is often distinguished of films about Judaism, I can understand why some Buddhist reviewers have disparaged “Minute Buddha” as overly-simplistic. For a lifelong practitioner of Buddhism, it probably is. Then again, people have to launch somewhere. Those of us who seriously practice a spiritual path – whatever it may be — tend to forget that intro level materials are objective that — basic intro. While the average Buddhist might already know the record of Buddha’s life by heart, the colossal majority of non-Buddhists here in the USA do not. Also retain in mind that this is a PG family film, not an historical documentary. My impression was that the film was primarily aimed at children, since the main characters is a itsy-bitsy boy, and the story-within-the-story about Buddha’s life is presented as a series of scenes in a book he (the American kid) is reading. Granted, the film does have an determined idealized, fairytale quality, but then again, so do the all those sand-and-sandals films about Jesus. Which is why I would residence “Tiny Buddha” in the same genre. I happen to like this kind of pagentry, so I enjoyed “dinky Buddha” for the icongraphy that it is.
On the technical kill, the cinamatography is stunning, the costumes are honorable, and the acting is well done. The chronicle, while fictional, is based on proper cases of Tibetan Lamas who have reincarnated in the West. As a companion to this film, I would recommend Vickie McKenzie’s book, “Reborn in the West,” which chronicles several such real-life cases. In fact, it was after reading McKenzie’s book that I noticed this film and decided to plan it.
Little Buddha is a wonderfully enchanting and historically moral film. The yarn has two plots, making it confusing at some times. One tells of a Buddhist priest searching for the reincarnation of his listless teacher, while the other tells the account of Siddhartha Guatama, the Buddha. (Played by Keanu Reeves)
As far as the acting goes, this film gets five stars from me. Siddhartha, (Reeves) is played beautifully, along with Lisa Conrad, (Bridget Fonda) and Lama Norbu. (Ruocheng Ying) Another plus about the acting are the three children who played the candidates for the reincarnation of the teacher. I especially liked Gita, who is the only girl candidate.

I liked the costumes, too, as they are historically fair, and stand out with the luminous colors and makeup. I found it odd that the men wore makeup, but they do, and the film portrays it brilliantly.
All along I have been mentioning how historically proper this film is. I have been saying this because it is the truth. Not only is the epic of Siddhartha moral, but all of the facts about Buddha and Buddhism are too. If you know nothing about the religion, watching this film will give you a basic introduction to Buddhism.
There are two things that would have made this film better. If it did not flash so noteworthy between the two plots, it would have been less confusing. Also, I did not like the music. I don’t know if it fair was not my type or if it didn’t go with the movie, but I didn’t like it. Itsy-bitsy Buddha is a grea movie and I recommend watching it, but don’t end your money on the soundtrack.

It kills me to contemplate that people are rating childrens and young teenage movies as adults I mean give the kids a rupture I dont reflect their trying to accept an award for it, I deem they impartial want to originate a suitable kids movie to execute them laugh and have fun. This movie was very humorous and had a memoir line that viewers have seen a lot of but with a gargantuan twist like 12 year traditional kids robbing a bank and doing a spacious job doing it. The talent in this movie suprised me especially by actors Corbin Bleu/Austin and Max Thieriot/Gus but not to remarkable by kristen stewart, after seeing her in awe room with jodie foster it was no secret she was worthy and has potential to be a great star sooner or later. These kids carry out in every portion of this movie. I dislike giving away pieces of the movie but the only thing that should be said is this is a huge movie for kids, teens, and any adult with a sense of humor dont let the shameful grades slapped on this movie finish you from watching it because you’ll miss something sterling. I have seen the cody banks movies and the survey kids and so on those were ok but this movie is a lot better and they should earn a second section.
I unprejudiced watched this movie with my two boys (ages 11 and
and while there are holes in the location and technical continuity to drive a truck through, as a tween-ager action flick this movie is enormous. I liked it better than the Witness Kids series.

The characters are very likable (with the exception of when Maddy manipulates the two boys into helping her purchase the bank by lying about loving them) and though it is hard to derive slack robbing the bank, it is definitely for a advantageous cause — to build her dad who Maddy idolizes. And when she does lift the money, she doesn’t capture any more than is actually needed. As one of the lines points out — there was 24 million dollars in the vault; why would anyone fair retract 250K?
The ending is heartwarming and leaves you with that warm fuzzy feeling.

I grew up reading Joy Adamson’s trilogy about Elsa, the lioness ['Born Free', 'Living Free' and 'Forever Free'], and Elsa has remained always very dear to my heart, an unforgettable furry heroine. This film is an obedient and truthful adaption of Mrs. Adamson’s incredible book. In the slack 1950’s Kenyan Game Warden George Adamson and his wife Joy became the foster parents of three female lion cubs whose mother had been killed by mistake. They eventually decided to send two cubs away to a zoo and support the smallest cub which had become the most dear to them. This was Elsa and she would secure world fame. Noteworthy joy and heartbreak followed when the Adamsons ultimately decided to rehabilitate Elsa succor into the wild. Since in their understanding that is where she belonged. After a difficult adjustment they were rewarded with success.
This film which was shot on set in Kenya and directed by Tom McGowan and James Hill is a remarkably shining and truthful adaption. It follows Elsa from cub hood to motherhood and superbly brings to life the joys and heartbreak which Elsa and the Adamsons went through together. Considerable of this is due to the honorable, dedicated and vibrant performances of Bill Travers and Virginia McKenna (who are true life husband and wife) as the Adamson couple. The Travers couple worked closely with George Adamson who was an advisor for this film in regard with the lions. Since they aimed at natural performances by the lions. Friendship would effect between the Travers and the Adamsons and they bonded firmly with the lions. After this film the Adamsons would continue with the rehabilitation of mountainous cats succor into the wild and the Travers besides acting went into wildlife conservation.
Since the heroine of this film is a furry one, something certainly needs to be said about the lionesses, lions and cubs who gave such astounding and though-provoking performances here. The section of Elsa was taken by the lionesses Girl, Mara and Henrietta and the dedication and adore of George Adamson and the Travers brought them to outstanding performances.

This is a movie that ALL must search for!! It is the most heart-warming epic ever written. I am so happy that Joy and George Adamson shared their chronicle of Elsa with the rest of the world!!!!

As an avid fan of sequenced graphics passe to animate a story-line, this 20 year labor of esteem tells the sage of the radiolarian discovered(? ) and lavishly illustrated (4000 drawings) by Ernst Haeckel. As astonishing as the memoir is in describing the do that this single-celled organism had on the world of its time, it is the leisurely the scenes making-of by the director that reveals a dedicated researcher and phenomenally patient compositor. I started my career in animation & then computer graphics some 20 years ago, and know pudgy well the tedium that single frame animation places on the animator prior to computer aided pieces. This movie could only be made because two individuals made it their mission to do the impossible. First, we have Ernst Haeckel, the zoologist, who became fascinated by the symmetrical structure of single celled organisms and discovered thousands of recent species. Then he undertook the Herculean task of drawing all these different types that he viewed under his microscope. Then we have the filmmaker who decided to painstakingly photograph a thousand of these fantastic drawings of nature, turn them into animation cells, and earn a kaleidoscopic visual feast of their nearly infinite variety.
The first task was completed in about a decade…the second task two decades. So the final product is simply astounding. Along with the

The visuals are nothing short of resplendent, especially in HD. It’s worth the download fair to check out how beautifully the cg animation is rendered. The action scenes are tight, with Matrix-esque tiring, motion shots, crazy camera angles and an emphasis on heavy gun play, indicative of producer John Woo’s style. One drawback on the cg animation though is that when characters interact with each other physically it seems awkward. They don’t feel like they are touching. I imagine that when you execute something with animation like that you’d speed into clipping issues when the characters intereact heavily. In fact, it reminded me of sever scenes from Eternal Sonata, a video game using similar animation techniques but on a bigger scale obviously.

The tale is an upgrade from the first movie, although the main antagonist borrows heavily from classic Star Toddle villain, the Borg. There’s even a Borg like cube of sorts that serves as it’s foundation. The subplot consists of a triangle between Deunan, Briareos (the main protagonists from the first movie) and Tereus, a biroid created mostly from Briareos’s DNA who becomes Deunan’s unique partner after her lover falls in battle.
If I were to do a criticism I’d say that the main antagonist was revealed a tad too gradual, making the final resolution a diminutive anti-climactic. At a runtime of about an hour and 40 minutes I felt like another 20 minutes would have been justified. When it was over, I couldn’t quite fill it at first. Also, and this may be a reliable thing, events from the first movie go almost completely without mention. This means that you won’t have to have seen the first one to delight in this, but at the same time there is a lack of continuity for those that did.

All in all though, it’s a superb film and worth a gawk.
The first Appleseed film (from 2004) was quite a treat. The cell-shaded CG graphics looked very honorable for the time. Complementing this definite standout aspect was an racy myth and an righteous soundtrack. It’s worth noting that the epic, in particular, felt like a genuinely fresh re-animation of sci-fi concepts.
Fast forward to today and we have the sequel, Ex Machina. It’s exquisite simple to separate what works and doesn’t in Machina:
GRAPHICS:
The level of detail in the graphics has improved dramatically, and characters survey less like geometric objects with textures painted on and more like sterling people. The cityscapes are even more impressive. Furthermore, the action is more frequent and looks even slicker.
My two gripes with the visuals are these: First, in what is all too current in action movies like this, the best scene is the first one. Hands down. I don’t understand why so many directors feel the need to frontload their movies. I will say that the movie is less guilty of this than its predecessor. Second, movement outside of action scenes aloof looks a bit jerky. Some might fault mo-cap technology, but for my money, Final Fantasy: Advent Children boasted some great believable movement.
STORY/WRITING:
Here’s where Ex Machina falls apart. The record here isn’t anything you haven’t seen executed better in anime/other entertainment. Compared to the spot of the first movie- which created a fresh sci-fi framework, this one felt like a filler episode. The villain was cliche, the account far less complex/meaningful than the first, and any intrigue or mystery the yarn might yet have held was ruined by the evil writing. The film tasks itself with letting the viewer in on a number of concepts important to the area, but rather than integrate them seamlessly into the dialog, it bashes the viewer over the head with them.
MUSIC:
The soundtrack wasn’t bad- I unprejudiced didn’t examine it most of the time. This constitutes a miniature letdown considering how often I return to the soundtrack from the first movie.
OVERALL: Ex Machina is a study to observe and warrants a blu-ray retract. Honest don’t inquire of it to expand grand on the ideas introduced in the first Appleseed.

JUDGMENT CALL:
“Dirty Sexy Money” was a series that I really enjoyed when it first aired on television. The first season showed promise but it was such a shame that the WGA Writer’s Strike really save a damper on the series. Not only was the series sever short but its schedule was too erratic.
By the time it came assist on television for season 2, it was already ten months later. Too considerable time had passed since the finale and to beget things worse, when the second season did air, again the season was out of whack as the final five episodes took several months to air after it was reported that the series was canceled. Needless to say, the series did not have remarkable of a chance to acquire wait on on its feet.
After watching “Dirty Sexy Money – The Complete and Final Second Season”, not only did I indulge in it, it was bittersweet because the series ends with a major bombshell and you know there are no future episodes to continue the storyline.
Overall, I feel that fans of the series can obtain some closure with this final DVD situation and collect some satisfaction from the final 13 episodes. As mentioned, the final episode was quite tantalizing and again, it’s a shame that the series will not be continued.
As for the characters, I found them all quite inspiring and you eventually become drawn to that character’s storyline. I was also drawn by the drama and the multiple infighting between the characters, and it’s quite consuming because one can glean similarities with this drama series to 80’s drama series such as “Dallas” and “Dynasty” which involve corporate greed, families that were born with luxury and of course, those few characters on the outside who seem to disfavor that lifestyle.
I felt that the trimming of the first season down to 10 episodes possibly took away from powerful needed character development and for the second season, although I enjoyed the series, I did have some problems with seeing the disintegration of Cleave and Lisa’s marriage but also seeing this somewhat unlikely storyline spellbinding Simon Elder and Nola Lyon. It was a bit farfetched and in someways, I objective felt that the character of Simon seemed a bit too young to be the rival of Tripp Darling and therefore, for me, it hindered the storyline as these two rich corporate behemoths would go against each other. It unprejudiced didn’t seem true.
I did luxuriate in the portion of Karen Darling because her character could have been handled as the typical socialite (ie. which fits the character of Juliet Darling) but easily redeems herself as a person that wants to be care for and wants to cherish someone. So, it was quite sharp to survey how her character started to evolve through the second season.
As for the DVD release, “Dirty Sexy Money – The Complete and Final Second Season” does feature solid report quality for a drama series on DVD and for the most fraction, the series doesn’t have bad lighting issues or heavy noise during low-light conditions that some drama series tend to have. I felt that the plot fabricate and even the costume beget was well-done for the series and capturing that style and feel of the rich Darling family and their living state. Audio was quite positive and there are a few special features included. Although, I do wish there was some sort of commentary track included, especially for the final episode.
Overall, fans who dedicated their time into watching “Dirty Sexy Money” will want to definitely check out this final second season if you happen to miss the episodes on television. Again, the final season will provide enough closure for the viewer but then instantly give you a feeling correct at the slay of the final episode of wanting more.
It’s hard to recommend a TV series on DVD especially when the series has been canceled but for the most allotment, fans who loved the series or those who missed out on how the series ended, will procure “Dirty Sexy Money – The Complete and Final Second Season” satisfying but at the same time, a bittersweet feeling that you want even more “Dirty Sexy Money”, but lustrous that there will be no more continuing episodes.
I cherish this exhibit. How could they not have renewed it for additional seasons??

I saw this film when it was broadcast on UK TV around Christmas 2001. It is a wonderfully acted and hugely evocative historic epic of an astonishing adventure narrative. Essentially a British period drama with some shapely actors who are eminently believable in their roles. The Shakespearean actor Kenneth Branagh stars as Shackleton with Lorcan Cranitch and Brand McGann as his actual lieutenants Frank Wild and Tom Crean.
The first section of the film may run a petite for those keen to bag to the ice and the upright adventure, but it sets a historical basis for what is to follow. How Shackleton is up against the odds even before his ship has sailed and the planning for an expedition that may not actually happen is a anecdote in itself about Shackleton’s self-belief and his device not to fail those who have save their faith in him.
Once the anecdote gets to the Antarctic, the frozen south and the pack ice, it inspires feelings of “How did they manufacture that ogle so precise, without actually doing it? “. The atmosphere of being lost in the middle of endless pack ice is portrayed very realistically and the human emotions of those caught up in this drama are believable.

For those who do not already know the sage, I would recommend reading it first in one of the many books available. For me this is one of, if not the most fantastic stories of all time. It is like three unbelievable adventures encourage to encourage.
I won’t spoil the paunchy legend for the uninitiated, but in the first adventure Shackleton’s crew are stranded in the Antarctic pack ice for the winter, not a totally unexpected place of affairs in itself, but certainly not honorable news. This slowly turns to misfortune as the ice crushes the ship leaving the crew stranded on crumbling ice, miles (hundreds of miles) from land with no blueprint of summoning support. They manage to pick up to dry land eventually on Elephant Island.
Elephant Island is a respite, but no site to hang around. The second adventure then starts when Shackleton and five others have to gross 800 miles of the stormiest ocean in the world at on of the worst times of year in a 20-foot lifeboat.

This accomplished, they win themselves on the rank side of a immense island having to unfavorable peaks, ice fields and glaciers that no one had ever done before hand to arrive a whaling region where from where rescue could be called. With no equipment and already exhausted, three of the men strive onwards and earn it.
None of the 28 crew of the ship, the Endurance are lost against fantastic odds.
A wonderful chronicle, that is inspiring for the Antarctic buff, history buff and any one who unbiased enjoys a noble record.
This movie, combined with the obedient bonus material, is a generous bargain for those wishing to augment their reading on Shackleton’s story Antarctic survival memoir. It cannot be mature as a principal source for learning about it, however.

For that, I highly recommend ‘Endurance: Shackleton’s Wonderful Voyage’ by Alfred Lansing.
Lansing broken-down the diaries of the men as his significant source, along with interviews of expedition survivors. The result is a considerable more detailed opinion of all of the men and how they came to be chosen so intuitively by Shackleton, using his unerring sense of not only their particular skills but how they would all work together as a team. Also, it gives one a considerable better sense than the movie of their interrelationships as the hardships mounted and the sheer length and depth of their struggle to survive. By being able to go well beyond what a necessarily time-limited (and budget-limited) dramatic production can encompass, one is drawn noteworthy deeper into the day-to-day struggles the expedition faced and the truly mettlesome nature of the trouble keep forth by all – particularly Shackleton. Where the movie gives short shrift to perhaps the most astonishing allotment of the entire adventure – the voyage of Shackleton and a few of the men from Elephant Island to South Georgia in a little boat – Lansing’s book allows us to relive the sheer anxiety and swear exhaustion and deprivation the men faced. The movie spent far too noteworthy time station on the pre-voyage quest for financial backing and the fairly irrelevant sub-plots about wife and mistress – which, most certainly, had absolutely nothing to do with ‘The Greatest Survival Anecdote of All Time’. There was also precious small detail in the movie about the many, many months the men spent on the pack ice, then on Elephant Island while Shackleton made his intention to South Georgia and relieve, and the means they all veteran to finish alive and relatively sane in their respective situations. Also, Shackleton’s fantastic mountaineering feat in the crossing of South Georgia to the whaling residence was not given its capable due – truly an improbable accomplishment in its possess accurate.

The movie is, however, quite well done and the actors are very pleasurable and well cast. A bigger budget production could perhaps have better captured the daunting scope of the challenges faced by the expedition, but it would have had to be many hours longer.
All in all, when you seize into chronicle the bonus extras – the A&E biography of Shackleton and the 2-hour History Channel production on the exploration of Antarctica – it’s sparkling hard to beat this DVD region.
Just manufacture definite you read Lansing’s fabulous myth to really catch the chunky flavor of the improbable hardships and sheer fright faced by Shackleton and his men, because you fair won’t score that from this movie.

Dare we say that the only exact reason to hold this film in the US is it has Mutoh Keiji (the Colossal Muta) as the lead? Otherwise, it’s fine standard fare (although not a terrible tale by any means) . It’s quite fun for what it is, although a bit outlandish.

Worth the engage for Mutoh Keiji fans!
Throw in The Creature From The Shadowy Lagoon, Humanoids From The Deep, detective drama, Japanese folk legends, and anime, and you’ll gain something like Dragon Blue.
Mayuko Mizuki is a feng shui practitioner sent down to Isogata Village located on Tatsunomiya Island. Professor Noriaki Matsubara, the mentor of her boss, reports the disappearances of local woman and tourists, and slaughters of the men they were with. Mayuko doesn’t want to go, but her boss tells her “I consider you are approaching an encounter that will change your life.” Too just. She later has a dream of a woman being chased by a monster.

Mayuko makes friends with Satomi, Matsubara’s daughter, her boyfriend Kisuye, the junior high school teacher, and Takuya, Satomi’s young but pouty cousin who is deeply attached to her. They get her feel welcome, but then there’s the fallacious Saga, the heavy residence local priest complete with robes, staff, and wart on his face, who sees her as an intruder. Not only is he the most odious character, but he does some really gross overacting in one scene.
She also comes across Detective Ryusaki, who is investigating the disappearance of a woman with an emerald pendant for an insurance company. They rub each other the inappropriate procedure at first, but it turns out he’s actually a nice guy, only disillusioned with things in the world. “There are worse things around here than monsters. The politicians, and the land developers and the bankers. They’re ruthless. They’re only in it for themselves.” Before long, more incidents occur.
Mayuko, while being the heroine, doesn’t seem to score along with two men, her boss, and Ryusaki, and she’s heavenly morose and even whiny with the latter, which is too unpleasant as she spends a lot of time with the detective. She does however, place a rapport with Satomi and Takuya. And this has to be the first film where I’ve seen someone impaled by a fish.

I’ve always wondered the purpose of those adult anime of tentacled aliens assaulting young girls, and I found out why from an explanation given to Mayuko: “After many centuries, man’s greed and unfriendly desires have become so lethal that the shield [between demon and human worlds] is collapsing. Humanity’s iniquity now exceeds the bounds of Heaven and Earth. It cuts loose the demons that had once been fettered. The cross of the world runs rampant. They now feed on hatred, greed, and sorrow. These demons will continue to rage unless they are stopped.” I often wonder if those predictions have already advance upright.
A crime drama mixed with alarm and the supernatural, Dragon Blue only mirrors anime in the action scenes, and a coarse budget feel that’s watcheable.
